India’s First Girls’ School Groundbreaking for National Monument!

A month after a court order, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC Pune) early on Tuesday demolished the dilapidated building of Bhide Wada, where social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule started the first school for girls in 1848.

India’s first school for girls was started by Phule on January 1, 1848 at the historic Bhide Wada in Pune. The civic body is planning to construct a national memorial dedicated to the social reformer couple at the site, officials said. However, local citizens and traders refused to vacate the place and approached the court.

The Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court recently cleared the way for the Pune Municipal Corporation to construct a national monument on the site and ordered the shop owners and tenants of the dilapidated building to vacate the site.

“The legal process will be completed and we will proceed with the work related to the National Monument project at the site,” said a Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) official. Meanwhile, as the Municipal Corporation demolished the building, a large police force was deployed in the area. The castle was completely demolished sometime after midnight.
